What is Art Therapy?
In this short video, Dr Val Huet, CEO of The British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) gives a wonderful explanation of Art Therapy:
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses different tools of art in order to open another dimension for people to express their emotions.
- art therapy can be provided in groups or individually
- art therapy can be provided to all age groups from children to the elderly
- you don't need to have any previous experience with art therapy in order to start it
- you don't need to have any experience or skills with art in order to benefit from the sessions
- the focus is on the process of creating art, NOT on the art product itself
- art therapy is NOT an art lesson, neither the group nor I am there to judge your artwork
- art therapy takes place in a safe and non-judgemental space. Anything you say, any artwork you create will be treated in a confidential, respectful and non-judgemental way
- the main goal of art therapy is self-expression. Art materials created during the sessions are viewed as a kind of mirror reflecting the creator's thoughts and feelings about something
- there is no right or wrong way to create art - the way you do it will always be accepted
